Palace Beneventano del Bosco

Historical background

The ancient medieval palace, purchased by the Beneventano family in 1778, was renovated (1779-88) by Luciano Alì. Notable features include the majestic facade that retains medieval stonework, especially in the first order, with a prominent central section featuring a large projecting portal and a wide balcony topped by a tall pediment.

Even more striking is the architectural composition of the rear wall of the first courtyard, with its beautiful cobblestone and slab flooring. From this wall rise paired columns, creating a tight rhythm in the arches of the first order and in the three windows of the first elevation. The noble floor rooms are adorned with stucco decorations and overdoor paintings by Ermenegildo Martorana.

The palace

The palace hosted the English admiral Horatio Nelson during the Napoleonic Wars, as well as King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. The whimsical and theatrical late Baroque courtyard, paved with cobblestones, is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Syracuse.
